This is my newest custom doll, Morveren the Mermaid and I am so so proud of her.

I named her Morveren after the Legend of the Mermaid of Zennor, Cornwall. It means Sea Maiden in Cornish. The legend says Morveren the mermaid lured Matthew Trewella back to the sea with her after falling in love with his singing after hearing him in the church choir. If you don't know the legend check it out.

Made out of a fashionista barbie, I removed her legs from below the knee n sculpted her tail out of super sculpey over a strong wire armature, it took a couple of attempts and was trial and error after a few cracks n breaks, until I was finally pleased with it. I based it loosely on the mermaid tails in the most recent Pirates of the Caribbean film. I painted her tail in metalic silvery green with silver a darker green n copper scale details, she has scales on her shoulders and forehead too. I then gave her hair the salty surf look with a dab of water on a wet wipe n then sprayed with hairspray.

I love the fact that her tail suits a seated, swimming or lounging pose with out even moving, it was difficult to get that shape right.

How do you bake the clay to harden it without the doll melting?

I boil it in stages to harden the clay, I have a very tall wide pot which i dunk the tails into for about 15mins to harden it. I keep the top half of the doll out the water to not get ruined. I want to find a strong good quality air drying clay but dont know any.

It doesnt seem to do it any harm, they spray it on when the make them to hold the hairstyle they are set with in the box, I didnt use much, and I mixed it in with a wet wipe so it spread further. and thank you glad you like it :)

Did you boil the clay or actually bake it? I am going to be making a mermaid soonish and had originally planned on Sculpey but decided on paper clay.
